There are two Carnot engines A and Boperating in two different temperature
regions. For Engine A the temperatures of
the two reservoirs are 150°C and 100°C. For
engine B the temperatures of the reservoirs
are 350°C and 300°C. Which engine has
lesser efficiency?

• Given:

Engine A-> T1 = 150°C , T2= 100°C

Engine B -> T1'= 350°C, T2'= 300°C

• Efficiency of a Carnot cycle is defined as the the maximum efficiency one can get when the heat engine is operating between two temperatures.

• Efficiency (η)= Net work done by heat engine/ Heat absorbed by engine

η= (T1-T2)/T1 ..... (i)

• Substituting given values in equation (i) , we get:

For engine A

η= (150-100)/150

η= 50/150 = 1/3 or 0.33

For engine B

η= (350-300)/350

η= 50/350= 1/7 or 0.14

• From above calculations, it can be seen that engine B has lesser efficiency.
