let the numbers be x & y

x + y = 48

x - y = 8

(x + y)(x - y) = 48 \times 8 \\  {x}^{2}   -  xy + xy -  {y}^{2}  = 384 \\  {x}^{2}  -  {y}^{2}  = 384
