There are two pumps to fill a tank with water. First pump can fill the empty tank is 8 hours, while the second in 10 hours. If both the pumps are opened at the same time and kept open for 44 hours, the part of tank that will be filled up is

Small correction here, pumps are open for 4 hours not 44 hours (as tank will be overflown in that much time.)

◆ Answer -

9/10th part of tank is filled

◆ Explaination -

1st pump fills tank in 8 hours, so it will fill 1/8th tank in 1 hour.

2nd pump fills tank in 10 hours, so it will fill 1/10th tank in 1 hour.

When both pumps are kept open for 4 hours, part of tank will be filled as -

Part of tank = 4 × 1/8 + 4 × 1/10

Part of tank = 1/2 + 2/5

Part of tank = 9/10

Therefore, 9/10th part of tank will be filled in 4 hours on keeping both pumps open.
