The latter is the better one.

Explanation:

Those students who just memorise for the sake of passing their examination have not really gained much. On the other hand, those who take extra time and care to understand and learn their lessons are benefitted ,not only at present but also in the future. In fact, it is not just upon the students, what I really feel is that the schools should also start initiating steps wherein the students are taught to understand their lessons instead of just going with the old method (memorisation). This will go a long way in ensuring that we are grooming the students in the right direction.
