There are two walls A & B which are 200 m apart from each other. A boy standing at 50 m away from wall A claps his hands once. If the speed of sound in the air is 320 m/s. What is the time interval between the first and second echo that he hears?

Answer:

If it takes one second for the sound to travel to the wall and back, the total is 300m (1 second * 300m/s) from the man to the wall and back. So between the man and the closer wall, there is half that or 150m.

The second part is done the same way. In 1.5 seconds, the sound will travel 450m (1.5s * 300m/s) in total. Half of this is 225m, found in the same way as the first part.

Finally, you add the two values together and we get 150m + 225m = 375 m between the walls.
