There have been many talks about the inapplicability of the concept of “human
rights” in the Asian Context. In 2016, this has been used as a basis for those
arguing for President Duterte’s condoning of extrajudicial killings of suspected
drug addicts in the Philippines. Do you agree with their argument that “human
rights” is a concept that is only applicable to developed nations with an
individualistic culture? Defend your answer.

Do you agree with the argument that “human rights” is a concept that is only applicable to developed nations with an individualistic culture?

  • Many developing countries consider human rights as a foreign concept inflicted on them by the Imperial West. It is believed by some that such a system can only successfully prevail in countries with good social order, supported by much wealth and resources.
  • Historically speaking, it is clear that the ancestors of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) were the American Declaration of Independence and the French Declaration of Rights of Man. With this in mind, one can indeed say that human rights are a western concept.
  • A stronger argument is that western culture is centred on the rights of the individual, or is individualistic, while most African and Asian cultures are community-oriented.
  • To counter this, the change that can be made is to the one-size-fits-all approach, which should be torn down in favour of a more flexible approach that will suit our pluralistic world with its multiplicity of cultures.
  • The West also needs to understand the shortcomings of the current human rights system in actually enabling human rights in the developing world.
  • However, coercive rituals that are objectively condemned able practised by cultures should be denounced because no rights like it being said, all are indeed "born free", and no individual should be oppressed based on their birth, physical features, or their decisions. human rights should ultimately be more inclusive and should never alienate the marginalised groups of people.
