There is a house now far away where once
I received love…. That woman died,
The house withdrew into silence, snakes moved
Among books. I was then too young
To read, and my blood turned cold like the moon.
How often I think of going
There, to peer through blind eyes of windows or
Just listen to the frozen air ……………………(i) Who does the phrase ‘that woman’ refer to? What happened after her
death? (2)
(ii) How did the poet feel when she visited that house? Why did she want
to go back to the house? (2)
(iii) After reading the extract, what do you infer about the poet? Express in
one sentence

Answer:

(i) Who does the phrase ‘that woman’ refer to? What happened after her

death? (2)

The phrase ‘that woman’ refers to Kamla Das’s grandmother. After her death the house became forlorn and derelict.

(ii) How did the poet feel when she visited that house? Why did she want

to go back to the house? (2)

The poet felt very scared when she visited the hose after her grandmother’s death. Though there were many books at that time, yet she could not read them; she felt there were snakes moving among the books. She wanted to go back to the house remembering the comfort and security she used to feel before her grandmother’s death.

(iii) After reading the extract, what do you infer about the poet? Express in

one sentence.

The poet is quite nostalgic about her association with her grandmother’s house where she had received so much of love.
