The phrase ‘that woman’ refers to Kamla Das’s grandmother. After her death the house became forlorn and derelict.

The poet felt very scared when she visited the hose after her grandmother’s death. Though there were many books at that time, yet she could not read them; she felt there were snakes moving among the books. She wanted to go back to the house remembering the comfort and security she used to feel before her grandmother’s death.
