<b>Cigarette smoking or even being exposed to high amounts of second hand smoke has negative effects on your heart and blood vessels. Not only does nicotine increase your blood pressure but it also boosts your heart rate and causes arteries to narrow and constrict. If the restricted blood flow is long-drawn-out in the arteries, a heart attack or deadly blood clots may result. Cigarette smoking also worsens other health problems related to high blood pressure such as pulmonary problems.

Even light smoking can increase the risk of hypertension. There is good evidence that 1 to 4 cigarettes per day raises the risk of coronary heart disease. If you smoke and have high blood pressure, talk to your doctor about a stop smoking plan. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services offers information online on how to quit smoking.

Smoking causes hypertension in the organism which means there is an increase in the blood pressure of the organism. The nichotine in tobacco which is inhaled due to smoking and if chews tobacco also increases the nichotine level in the body. This increased nichotine level in the body increases the heart blood pressure and narrows the arteries and hardens their walls and makes the blood more likely to clot.
