Flatterers only know how to praise others lavishly and get their words done whereas a true friend is someone who stands beside you during ur bad times, doesn't feel comfortable when you're in pain and shares the pain of ur grief. As we've seen in the poem - The Spider And The Fly, the spider praises d fly's beauty to a gr8 extent, so as to trap her in his den.

My exams were coming soon. But I've not completed my work as I was absent for many days. So, I was requesting everyone to give me notebooks but no one gave me. I was shocked to find that my best friend who always stood up with me just ignored me. But one of my friend who always pointed out mistakes on me gave her notebooks to me. I felt very bad that my best friend didn't helped me in the time of my need, she just left me when my fortunes were low. Even the girl who always pointed mistakes on me only helped me in the time of need. Then I realized that what is a sincere appreciation and what is an artificial flattery.
