There is a staircase as shown in fig. 10.232, connecting points A and B. Measurements of steps are marked in the figure. Find the straight line distance between A and B.

If you observe carefully, we can see that there is a large right triangle formed with the combined lengths of the other two sides of the triangle.

Extend the bottommost triangle's base and topmost triangle's 1.8 cm side till they touch each other at c.

AC=2+2+2+2=8cm
BC=1+1.6+1.6+1.8=6cm
So AB =  \sqrt{ AC^{2}+ BC^{2}  }
           = 10cm
