There is a tendency in sugar industry to shift towards south in India! Give arguments in favour of this statement.

In recent years, there is a tendency for the mills to shift and concentrate in the southern and western states of India, especially in Maharashtra. This is because the cane produced in here has a higher sucrose content. The cooler climate ensures a longer crushing season. . Along with Maharashtra, the other important sugar producers of South India are Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamilnadu.

Reasons are: These states have better climatic conditions for growing sugarcane. The sugarcane produced here has a higher sucrose

Long crushing season in south. In North India, it lasts from November to February (4 months); while in South it lasts from October to May or even June (nearly 8 months)

The mills in peninsular India are larger. Though Uttar Pradesh has more sugar mills than Maharashtra yet Maharashtra’s sugar mills are larger in size & Capacity. Further, the mills in cooperative sector in south are better managed.

Sugarcane industry is a seasonal industry so it is generally done by cooperatives. Cooperatives in these areas are more successful.
