Considering the pressure put on our fossil fuel reserves, available within the country, and the high import bill for import of petroleum and natural gas from overseas, it is imperative that we have a proper energy conservation policy in place and tap alternative sources of energy to meet the growing needs of a fast-paced economy.
Conservation can be done by reducing wastage and misuse of energy. It can also be done through prevention of transmission and distribution losses, due to faulty equipment, but mostly due to theft. Here, two examples of energy conservation would be a)prevention of electric power theft by hooking, and b) switching of the car ignition at traffic signals.
Coupled with energy conservation, India must lay greater thrust in harnessing renewable energy sources like solar and wind power. It must also exploit its nuclear capability in unleashing nuclear energy as basic raw material is now available to it from the Nuclear Suppliers' Group.
