Even light smoking can increase the risk of hypertension. ... That's because smoking damages your blood vessels and it also causesyour arteries to harden. Both of which will cause your blood pressure to go up. If you'vesmoked for years simply quitting may not be enough to lower yourblood pressure.

Hypertension due to smoking is a common side effect of smoking.  

Explanation:

This is because the smoking devices like cigarettes etc have high concentration of nicotine. It is a drug that raises the ‘blood pressure’ and ‘heart rate’.  

At the same time this drug also involves in the process by which the arteries become narrow and hardens their walls. That enhance the probability of blood clotting in blood vessels and exerts stresses on heart. Overall these are the main cause for hypertension.
