Community hygiene is the state of cleanliness that is achieved when all members of a community come together to maintain hygiene in and around their homes.

A lack of community hygiene is due to many factors, including:

  1. Illiteracy- The lack of education comes in the way of people's understanding. They do not realise that hygiene is an important part of life and lack of hygiene causes various diseases.
  2. Poverty- When people are poor and are trying to make ends meet, their focus is on saving. Thus, they do not bathe or wash clothes regularly.
  3. Remote location of the community- Towns that are in remote locations often get neglected by the government. So, community hygiene does not get enough attention.
  4. High levels of corruption- Very often funds that are allocated for improving the community hygiene levels are pocketed by corrupt officials and nothing is done for the people's welfare.

How can community hygiene be promoted:

By individuals:

  1. Children must be taught the importance of hygiene.
  2. Individuals should wash hands before meals and after using the toilet. Also, hands must be washed on entering the house.
  3. Individuals must bathe regularly.
  4. Clothes must be washed regularly and dried in the sun.
  5. Garbage should not be littered around.
  6. No water should be allowed to stagnate in containers around the house.
  7. Any blocked drains must be reported to the authorities.

By municipal corporations:

  1. Regular cleanliness drives must be conducted.
  2. Garbage should be collected from homes regularly and deposited in garbage collection centres.
  3. Awareness campaigns should be conducted to tell people about the importance of hygiene.
  4. Strict penalties should be imposed on those who throw garbage around.
