I’d say it’s always “acceptable” as long as it’s not damaging your own life in any significant way. That doesn’t mean it’s to be encouraged, or that it’s something one should necessarily do, but it’s certainly acceptable.

In terms of when one should do such a thing, I’d say that if a little loss of your own happiness would mean a significantly large increase for the happiness of another, then actually you do indeed have some degree of moral obligation to make the sacrifice.
