There is more vegetation on this side of a mountain it is called the Windward side.

  • The leeward side, or the side where the trade winds travel after hitting a mountain, is the drier side.
  • The wetter side is the one towards the wind which is called the windward side. A mountain's leeward side is the side that is protected from the prevailing wind.
  • Air rises and cools as the wind blows across a mountain range, and clouds might gather on the windward side. This is why mountain ranges on the windward side tend to get a lot of rain. The air on the leeward side of the mountain range normally sinks much drier and hotter than it was before.
  • Thus there is more vegetation on the windward side of a mountain due to moisture-laden winds.
