• Adivasis are the original residents of the subcontinent, as their name implies, and once inhabited far bigger areas than they do now.
• Over 95% of the scheduled tribes still reside in rural areas, where economic exploitation is still a major issue.
• Less than 10% are itinerant hunter-gatherers, but more than half rely on forest products for survival, many in the form of tendu leaves, which are used to make bidi (cigarettes).

• From mainstream Indian society, Adivasis continue to encounter prejudice and, in some cases, violence.
• Almost every socioeconomic measure shows that they are at their lowest point.
• Hence, it's necessary to give special protection to them.
