let x be the greatest number then X + 1 is greater than x thats why it is impossible to choose a number as the greatest number

yes it's true that there's no greatest number in the number system because if you think of a big number of, l let's say 55 digits and you think that it's the greatest number, if you add 1 to it, you get the number greater than the number which you have thought ... and thus it goes further and further to infinity...
