Television journalist Mary Carelli, who is beautiful and successful, happened to shoots and kills America ’s most famous writer, named Mark Ransom. The incidence took place in a posh San Francisco hotel suite. She claims that the writer had beat her and tried to rape her also. It is revealed to the readers that she had taken off all her clothes before the rape attempt by the writer and had put them back after shooting the writer. After that, she dialed 911 to inform the police. A lot of discrepancies in her statement, she comes under heavy suspected by police and is offered a chance to plea-bargain, which mean serving a few years in prison and ruining her career.

At the beginning of the play, Ma Ryan is just setting up the room when Ma Moore comes to chat with Ma Ryan. They discuss several topics, such as Ma Ryan's son Jim, Mrs. Wilson's son Larry, and others.
Eventually, they come across a suspicious piece of news about a stolen diamond of unparalleled beauty. Then, unexpectedly, Ma Ryan discovers the beauty wrapped in a handkerchief. Though she does not just hold it fully exposed, she conceals it from Ma Moore instead.
Ma Ryan quickly checked after she left and found the diamond to be a replica of the image. She also developed some suspicions about Jim being the thief.
Then, out of nowhere, two men enter the room, whom Ma Ryan soon spots as Jim and an unseen stranger.
They both talk with Ma Ryan and try to convince her to give them the diamond, but to no avail. Ma Ryan thinks of Jim as the thief, so she doesn't let Jim or the stranger have it.
They both describe the whole situation to Ma Ryan, how they got the diamond, that they were no thieves, and that the stranger was none other than Van King. Or the owner of the diamond.
Ma Ryan realizes her big blunder and hands them the diamond.
