Answer:

capacity of water in a can =

5  \frac{2}{3}

first we will convert it in improper fraction = 3x5+2 = 17/3

capacity of water Sam used =

2 \frac{1}{4}

now we will convert it in improper fraction = 4x2+1 = 9/4

now convert these into like fractions,

LCM of 4 & 3 = 2x2x3 = 12

 \frac{17}{3}  \times  \frac{4}{4}  =  \frac{68}{12}

 \frac{9}{4}  \times  \frac{3}{3}  =  \frac{27}{12}

 \frac{68}{12}  -  \frac{27}{12}  =  \frac{41}{12}

Step-by-step explanation:

x +  \frac{y}{z}  = x  \frac{y}{z}

5 + 2/3 + 2 + 1/4 = 3 and 5/12 = 3 5/12
