There was a village named Rampur in which lived two best friends, Ram and Shyam. Every morning, they used to walk to a nearby lake to fetch water required for household chores, for example, washing utensils, clothes etc. Each of them used to bring back 6 litres of water for their house. However, the daily consumption in Ram’s house for washing utensils was 3/4th of the total quantity and in Shyam’s house, it was ¾ litres out of the total quantity. Did both families consume the same quantity of water every day for washing utensils? Justify your answer. You may also use illustrations.

Answer:

Well, they did not

In Ram's house, they consumed 3/4 of the total quantity, that is they simply consumed a fraction of the total amount of water they bought in.. so in  Ram's house, they consumed 3/4 of 6 liters, that is 4.5 liters. Now they have 1.4 liters left for all other chores.

In Shyam's house, they consumed 3/4 of a liter for their utensils, that is 0.75 liters. Now they have 5.25 liters left for all other chores.
