Given:

There were 24¼ (24 1/4 ) crates of tomatoes in the barn but 7⅗ (7 3/5 ) crates of tomatoes were rotten and had to be thrown out.

Joe sold 8 ⅓ (8 1/3 ) crates and canned 7 ⅚ (7 5/6 ) crates of tomatoes.

To find:

How many crates of tomatoes were left?

Solution:

The total crates of tomatoes in the barn = 24¼ = \frac{97}{4}

The crates of rotten tomatoes = 7⅗ = \frac{38}{5}

∴ After throwing the rotten tomatoes, the crates of tomatoes left are,

= \frac{97}{4} - \frac{38}{5}

= \frac{485 - 152}{20}

= \frac{333}{20}

The crates of tomatoes that were sold = 8 ⅓ = \frac{25}{3}

The crates of tomatoes that were canned = 7 ⅚ = \frac{47}{6}

Now,

After few of the crates were sold and few were canned, the crates of tomatoes left were,

= \frac{333}{20} - [\frac{25}{3} + \frac{47}{6} ]

= \frac{333}{20} - \frac{25}{3} - \frac{47}{6}

= \frac{999 - 500 - 470}{60}

= \bold{\frac{29}{60} }

Thus, \underline{\bold{\frac{29}{60} }} crates of tomatoes were left.
