Let the original expenditure be x

No. of students = 36

.•. Total expenditure = 36x

According to question , the expenses of mess increase by Rs. 32 per day and average expenditure reduces or diminishes by Rs. 1

=> 36x+ 32 = ( x - 1 ) 32

=> 36x + 32 = 32x - 32

=> 4 ( 9x + 8 ) = 4 ( 8x - 8 )

Cut 4 from both the side , we have

=> 9x +8 = 8x - 8

=> 9x - 8x + 8 + 8 = 0

=> x + 16 = 0
