Let the no. of chickens = y

Total no. of heads = heads of goats + heads of chickens = 20

→x+y = 20 ————Eq.(1)

Total no. of legs = legs of goats + legs of chickens = 56

→ 4x + 2y = 56

→ 2x + y = 28 ————Eq.(2)

Now, x = 20 - y from Eq.(1)

and substituting the value of x in Eq.(2)

→ 2(20 - y) + y = 28

→ 40 - 2y + y = 28

→ 40 - y = 28

→ 40 - 28 = y

→ 12 = y

So, the no. of chickens are 12.

And no. of goats are => x + 12 = 20 => x = 8
