Answer:

Given the candidate who received 43% of votes was defeated by 420 votes i.e., the another candidate got 420votes extra than he recieved.

Cand1- 43%

Cand2 - 43%+420

43% of v +(43% of v+420) = Total 100% of votes

100%-86% = 420

14% of v(votes)= 420

14(x)/100 = 420

14x = 420×100

X = 42000/14

X = 3000 votes cast in voting

Answer:

There are two things to notice:-

  • In such questions usually, the invalid votes are given but not here.
  • If the loser got 43%; then the winner got 57%; so the difference is 57–43=14% and 14% is given as 420 votes so; 1% votes=420/14=30 votes;
  • So 100% or the total votes = 30*100=3000 votes

Ans= 3000 votes.
