Answer:

The answer is 4.

A gust of wind blew out all of the candles but 4, meaning 4 are left from being blown out. 4 are left lit.

This question is actually pretty sneaky. I thought the answer was 6 at first. Most people expect the answer to be 6, assuming that we are to figure out how many blew out. The trickiness comes in that the answer lies in plain sight. We are told the correct answer, 4, right before we are asked the question.

But I have other questions…

First of all, if the candles are in a room, where is the wind blowing from? Windows? An open door? A missing wall? This isn’t really important to the answer, but I mean ?????

We should also analyze the words “blew out.” What does it mean? With context, we can see that the candles are blown out, or, the flame is put out. But what if the gust of wind is blowing out of six of the candles?

“A gust of wind blew out all but 4.”

Maybe wind is blowing out of the candles??? Not really sure how that would happen, but I guess that this could be an interpretation.

As for lit…

Lit could mean lit as in “that’s lit” but using lit like this isn’t very common anymore. Still, maybe this is a trick question. Maybe the candles have always been lit. Maybe all 10 are still lit.

Thanks for reading through my answer!

Hope will be helpful ☺️
