Given :-

  • 15% students did not cast their vote .
  • 64 votes were declared invalid.
  • The winnings candidate secured 49% of the total votes and wins by 805 votes .

To Find :-

  • the votes polled to each of them.

Solution :-

Let us assume that, Total votes in the election were 100x .

Then,

→ Student did not cast their vote = 15% of 100x = 15x votes.

and,

→ winning candidate secured = 49% of total votes = 49% of 100x = 49x votes.

So,

→ Losing candidate secured votes = Total votes - (winning candidate votes + Student did not cast their vote + invalid votes.)

→ Losing candidate secured votes = 100x - (49x + 15x + 64)

→ Losing candidate secured votes = 100x - 64x - 64 = (36x - 64)

given that, The winnings candidate wins by 805 votes .

Therefore,

→ winning candidate votes - losing candidate votes = 805

→ 49x - (36x - 64) = 805

→ 49x - 36x + 64 = 805

→ 13x = 805 - 64

→ 13x = 741

→ x = 57 .

Hence,

votes Polled to winning candidate = 49x = 49 * 57 = 2793 votes (Ans.)

votes Polled to losing candidate = (36x - 64) = (36*57 - 64) = 1988 votes (Ans.)
