Even thermodynamically exothermic reactions sometime require a certain amount of activation energy for the reaction to proceed in forward direction and yield products. Hence, sometimes they are not spontaneous. More over, spontaneous reactions are those reactions which once "initiated" proceed in forward direction without any external driving force.
