Direct - They cried, "Alas! he is dead".
Indirect - They exclaimed in grief that he was dead.

The above narration is the narration of sudden emotions. The different kinds of emotions are joy, grief etc. When we changing direct to indirect speech of these kind of sentences follow certain rules are:
- The reporting verb changes to exclaim in (with) grief, joy, wonder, etc. according to the sense of emotion like Alas, Hurrah etc.
- Here an excalmatory sentence is turned into a statement, hence a linker "that" is used.
- Sometimes, we can find What or how in the beginning of Excalmatory sentence, that changes into great, or very. Great is generally placed before noun and very before adjective. (Example - 2)
- The most important, Exclamation mark(!) is changed into full stop(.)
Examples:
- Direct - The boy said, "Hurrah! We won the match."
- Indirect - The boy exclaimed with joy that they had won the match.
- Direct - He said, "What a nice bird it is!"
- Indirect - He exclaimed with wonder that it is a very nice bird.
- Direct - He said, "Bravo! You have done well."
- Indirect - He applauded them saying that they had done well.
- Direct - The teacher said, "Thank you, my boys!"
- Indirect - The teacher thanked the boys.
