This line belongs to the poem The Cold Within by JAMES PATRICK KINNEY... The boy is appointed comment on lack of warmth And compassion in human relations None of the 6 people who by chance are trapped together in bitter cold agree to put in use their stick of wood .... The poet through the discriminatory act of 6 humans, Tries to depict attitudes of the human beings in general . The first man on seeing a black man does not give his wood . The 2nd man on finding that one of them does not belong to his church that is religious community holds back his log . The poor man does not put his log to use to prevent that each man from getting warm . The rich man's concern is his wealth and how to keep it safe from the lazy poor man . The black man's face is filled with revenge and thus to harm the white does not use a stick of wood . The last man is ruled by selfishness and gives only to those who give him in return ... The 6 men in the poem can be seen as the representative of the whole human race. It is said that these men are overtaken by the feelings of revenge anger and spite to such an extent that eventually these prejudices lead to the downfall .... The 6 humans are devoid of humanity and even when they're going through the same situation they cannot cooperate. Warmth and compassion for each other is not seen in them Each one of them has a log that can be put to use not only for others but also for themselves... However their differences surpass their survival instinct.. The discrimination, bigotry, And racism Proves Futile As none of them could survived at the end... Each perishes says not because of the cold outside but Of the cold hearted ness within each. Outside cold could have been taken care of only if they were not cold from within Outside cod could have been taken care if only they were not cold from within... ...

Answer:

By the phrase “the cold within” the poet means the coldness of the hearts — the lack of warm human spirits of the six persons who gathered around the dying fire in that winter evening. Though all of them possessed a log of wood, none agreed to give it to the fire to keep it burning and keep them warm. This was because of the discriminatory attitude they had against each other over petty things like class, caste, colour, religious faith or ethnicity. In the end, they were found frozen to death with their logs held in their still hands. Therefore the poet commented that the death was not due to the cold outside, it was the cold within their hearts that killed them. This is a great way to convey the message of harmony in the society and the way Kinney sums up the poem is amazing. The title of the poem, ‘The Cold Within’ is suggestive of the central theme or message of the poem and thus is just and apt.
