Direct Speech: They said, “We have been waiting for you since morning.''

Indirect Speech: They said that they had been waiting for me since morning.

There are two kinds of speeches.

1. Direct Speech:

  • In Direct speech, we repeat the exact words by the speaker. Reporting speech is placed between inverted commas. For example, He said, " I have lost my pen".

2. Indirect Speech:

  • In Indirect Speech, we repeat in our own words what is said by the speaker. generally, we use "said that" in this speech. For example, He said that he had lost his pen.

Rules to change direct speech to indirect speech:

present simple changed to past simple

present continuous changed to past continuous

present perfect changed to past perfect.

present perfect continuous changed to past perfect continuous

past simple change to past perfect

past continuous changed to past perfect continuous

Answer:

  • The given direct speech is said to turn into indirect speech and it is : They said that they had been waiting for me since morning.

  • Here in direct speech, reporting verb has been written in Simple Past Tense and reported speech has been written in Present Perfect Continuous Tense. So according to direct speech's reporting verb the indirect reported speech has been turned into Past Perfect Continuous Tense and it is mentioned above.

  • 'That' is used when direct speech is turned into indirect speech.
