They were happy days, those of Oliver's recovery,
Everything was so quiet and neat and orderly, everybody
was so kind and gentle, that Oliver began to think this
was Heaven after the kind of life that he had lived before.
Mr Brownlow bought him a new suit, a cap and shoes;
they were the first new clothes Oliver had ever had. He
gave
his old clothes to a servant who had been kind to
him and asked her to sell them to an old Jew, who dealt
in old clothes, and keep the money for herself. Oliver,
watching from the parlour window, saw the Jew roll the
clothes
up in his bag and walk away, and he felt thankful
to have seen the last of them.
Some days later Mr Brownlow sent for Oliver to have
a talk with him.
Now I want you to pay great attention, my boy, to
what I am going to say,' said Mr Brownlow.
"Oh, don't tell me you are going to send me away, sir,
pray!' exclaimed Oliver, frightened by Mr Brownlow's
serious tone. 'Let me stay here and be a servant. Don't
send me back to that wretched place I came from. Have
mercy, sir!
