They were very hungry. All day long they had wandered in the forest without any food. Now, they decided to try their luck in the village. The young man and his older companion stepped out of the thicket and made their way to the nearest hut. A family of four was sitting around a wood stove and eating a meal. An elderly woman was frying puas and the others- her son, grandson and granddaughter- were eating. The woman poured a ladle into the hot oil in the pan, and then waited for the pua to cook before flipping it over carefully. It was a slow process, and everyone had to wait a long time for their turn to get a pua. The young boy was getting impatient. “Dadi, is it done yet?” He held out his plate with an outstretched arm, ready to take the pua as soon as it was ready. Then, finally, the pua was on his plate and he plunged his finger straight into its steaming golden centre. But no sooner had he done this than he cried out, “Aaah!” for he had burnt his fingers. “Silly child!” exclaimed his grandmother. “How can you be so foolish?” she chided. “You are as foolish as Chandragupta who is trying to conquer Magadha from the centre.” The boy stopped wailing and asked, “What foolish thing has Chandragupta done, Dadi?” “Oh, that silly man is trying to overthrow the King of Magadha by raising an army and fighting him from within his own kingdom. Obviously, he is losing!”
