1) In his major works Tolstoy touches themes like importance of family life, search for the meaning of life, irrationality of human motivations, social changes in Russia in the nineteenth century.

2) He turned back because he realized that, with the current position of the sun, he couldn't cover the area he had wished and needed to hurry back to reach his point of departure by sundown.
