Answer:

We had a part time maid in our house.

I was around 13 back then. She used to come to our house regularly.

I remember, she used to ask me for my old shoe and clothes for her son who was some 2 years younger to me.

Those days, physical growth was so rapid that nearly more than half of the clothes and shoes were almost unused. Specially those warm clothes.

My mom used to give them to her, without giving a second thought. My mom also gifted her new clothes in festive seasons.

Whenever I used to demand things from my parents, they gave me whatever I wanted.

Every time, when the exam approached, my Mom and Dad both promised me to ask for anything that I wanted, if I made excellent results.

The results were always excellent, and I used to get whatever I asked, as they had promised earlier.

One day, while I was sitting with my Dad. I was telling him to get me a PC game that I wanted.

That maid came for her work, her son was with her.

He came and started playing with our dog.

I could see her son wearing a shirt which was of mine, an year ago.

My Dad told me, “Can you see? He is wearing the same shirt which you used to wear an year ago. Look how happily he is playing.”

I didn't think much about it.

“Imagine, had you been in place of her son, and you had to wear those old clothes.”, He added.

“Yesterday you were complaining about not having that game in your PC. But see, he hasn't even touched a PC properly till today. You have your new bicycle, but he walks on foot everyday to school. Don't you think We should be happy with whatever we have?”

His tone was so calm, he was trying to make me understand something.

“Yes Dad. I understand.”

I really understood what he wanted to say.

“Be happy with whatever you have. You're living a luxurious life while some are starving at their home, begging for money.”

“You should be happy and grateful to God for whatever he has given you. There are many happy people with much less.”

Those words really affected me. I didn't ask for that game anymore. But Dad got that game for me, 3 days later.

I am really grateful for whatever I have.

I'm grateful that when I wake up in the morning, I don't have to worry about food and money.

I'm happy and grateful for whatever I have.

I'm grateful for this life
