To find answers to their questions and to understand properly the disease, scientist obtained blood from beriberi patients and injected them into chickens. A control group of chickens did not receive any injection. After several days, the chickens injected with blood from beriberi patients fell ill. Surprisingly, even the control group suffered from the illness. Dr. Eijman, a member of the group of scientists working on the disease observed that before the experiment, all the chickens used in the study have been fed with whole-grain rice. During the conduct of the experiment, the chickens were fed with polished rice.
