It is native to South, West, and Southeast Asia, Europe, and northwestern Africa.
The gooseberry plant is a straggling bush which grows up to 1.5 meters (5 feet) in width and height. The branches are thickly set with sharp spines that may be single or in tufts that arise from the bases of the lateral leaf shoots.
It has bell-shaped flowers with deeply crenated 3 or 5 lobed leaves. The fruits are the berries which may be the wildtype or the cultivated type. The berries are known to have good medicinal value.
