it means that I have raised this child (his son)
and have molded him to my lifestyle and yet the things that he likes (or loves)

gvatsal901: The line that you have mentioned is one example which shows the desolation that the father feels. Here are a few other examples.

"Though we have lived together now,
In the same house for years. I know.."

"We speak like strangers, there’s no sign
Of understanding in the air."

In both cases, the father points out that he and his child are very different and therefore they feel like strangers towards each other, hence increasing the sense of isolation the father feels..
