This Indian independence activist and political
leader, widely known as Loknayak, is remembered
especially for leading the opposition to Indira
Gandhi in the 1970s. He was also instrumental
in the formation of the Janata Party. In 1998, he
was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna in
recognition of his social work.
