Usually the inert gas used in the advertisement sign is Neon. Not only Neon does not react with other gas, liquid, or solid materials, it is absolutely safe to pass electric current out of it.
There is no chance of explosion if charge is passed through the gas neon. Furthermore it glows when electricity is passes through it.
Other than neon, some other inter gases are helium (He), argon (Ar), krypton (Kr), xenon (Xe), radon (Rn), etc.
