the mistake you made is in the second step..the sum should go like this--
x/a-y/b=0
=> bx-ay/ab=0
=> bx-ay = 0___(i)
ax+by= (a²+b²) (according to what you've written) ____(ii)
(bx-ay)a=0×a
=>abx-a²y=0
(ax+by)b=(a²+b²)×b
=>abx+b²y=(a²+b²)×b
performing elimination
abx-a²y=0
abx+b²y=(a²+b²)b
=> -a²y-b²y=(a²+b²)b
=> -y(a²+b²)=(a²+b²)b
=> -y=b
=> y= (-b)
now put the value of y in equation (i) and complete the sum
