Question :

A and B can finish a piece of work in 16 days and 12 days respectively. A started the and worked at it for 2 days. He was then joined by B. Find the total time taken to find work.

Solution :

Given :

  • A and B can finish a piece of work in 16 days and 12 days respectively.
  • A started the and worked at it for 2 days.

To find :

  • The total time taken to finish the whole work =?

Step-by-step explanation :

Let whole work be, 1

Work done by A in one day = 1/16

Work done by B in one day = 1/12

A worked for 2 days = 2 × 1/16 = 1/8

Now,

Let A and B worked for x days.

According to the question,

1/8 + x (1/16 + 1/12) = 1

x × 7/48 = 7/8

x = 6.

Therefore, the total time taken to finish the work = 6 days.

Given :

  • Work done by A in a day = 1/16
  • Work done by B in a day = 1/20

\dashrightarrow\sf{As\:A\:worked\:for\:two\:days={\cancel{2}}\times\dfrac{1}{\cancel{16}}}

\dashrightarrow\sf{\dfrac{1}{8}}

  • Let a and b both worked for y days..

According to the question :

\dashrightarrow\sf{\dfrac{1}{8}+x\bigg(\dfrac{1}{16}+\dfrac{1}{12}\bigg) =1}

\dashrightarrow\sf{x\times{\dfrac{7}{48}}=\dfrac{7}{8}}

\dashrightarrow\sf{\dfrac{7x}{48}=\dfrac{7}{8}}

\dashrightarrow\sf{x=\cancel\dfrac{48\times{7}}{7\times{8}}}
