The normal white light splits up into several colors after passing through a prism and this phenomenon is named as dispersion of lights.

Actually, the white colored light is a combination of a few colored lights, namely red, orange, violet, blue, green and yellow. Upon entering the prism, each colored light ray bends into specific angles due to the characteristic wave frequencies of these light rays.

Thus, all the light rays are separated from each other and comes out as distinct colored rays.
