candidates passes = 96%
failed candidates = 100% - 96% = 4%
number of failed candidates = 50

Let the total number of students = x
thus 4% of x = 50
⇒x × 4/100 = 50
⇒x = 50*100/4
⇒x = 1250

1250 candidates had appeared for the exam.
