When separating a mixture of substances you need to consider their physical properties.

The most obvious property for sand and salt is their solubility.

Sand (Primarily SiO₂) is insoluble in water Salt (NaCl) is soluble in water.

So in order to separate them you would follow these steps.

Add water to the mixture, and stir thoroughly. (The salt will dissolve, forming a salt solution, the sand will not dissolve and remain as a solid)

Filter the mixture. (As the sand has not dissolved it will be unable to pass through the filter paper, as salt has dissolved it will pass through with the water)

Heat the salt solution until all of the liquid has evaporated. Solid salt crystals will remain.
