Given : (x,y)  pairs of a line in the coordinate plane.

. x y -56 66 -42 58 -28 50

To Find : What is the y-intercept of the line?

Solution:

x      y

-56   66

-42   58

-28    50

(58 - 66)/(-42 - (-56))

= -8/14

= -4/7

(50 - 58)/(-28 -(-42))

= -8/14

= -4/7

Hence it forms a linear equation with a slope = - 4/7

=> y = -4x/7  + c

x = -28 , y = 50

=> 50 = -4(-28)/7  +  c

=> 50 = 16 + c

=> c = 34

y = -4x/7  + 34

x = 0

=> y = 34

y intercept of line is 34
