It was the first garden-tomb on the Indian subcontinent, and is located in Nizamuddin East, Delhi, India, close to the Dina-panah Citadel, also known as Purana Qila (Old Fort), that Humayun found in 1533. It was also the first structure to use red sandstone at such a scale.

Built in the 16th century, Humayun's Tomb is also known as Necropolis of the Mughal dynasty. The site was built for Emperor Humayun by his widow and along with his tomb, the site holds 150 more tombs that belong to the members of the royal family.

Mirak Mirza Ghiyath built this tomb in the 16th century. Humayun's garden-tomb is also called the 'dormitory of the Mughals' as in the cells are buried over 150 Mughal family members. The tomb stands in an extremely significant archaeological setting, centred at the Shrine of the 14th century Sufi Saint, Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya.
