The abstract idea that Helen could not understand was the process of thinking and the word related to it which is 'think'. She concentrated her attention on the lesson and tried to think how she should have arranged the beads. Then Miss Sullivan touched her forehead and spelled with decided emphasis, 'think'. In a flash, Helen knew that the word was the name of the process that was going on in her head. It was the first conscious perception of an abstract idea.
