This went on until July. But I was still not satisfied. I was not sure
that all the terror had left. So I went to Lake Wentworth in New
Hampshire, dived off a dock at Triggs Island, and swam two miles
across the lake to Stamp Act Island. I swam the crawl, breast
stroke, side stroke, and back stroke. Only once did the terror
return. When I was in the middle of the lake, I put my face under
and saw nothing but bottomless water. The old sensation returned
in miniature.
(i) Name the chapter and its writer,
(ii) Why was the writer still not satisfied ?
(iii) What did 'he' do to satisfy himself ?
(iv) Which "old sensation' did he experience ?

The answer to the given questions are as follows:

(i) The name of the chapter is Deep Water and the name of the writer is William Douglas.

(ii) The writer was still not satisfied because he felt a tiny remnant of the fear every now and then.

  • He had a near-death encounter that left a huge mark on his mind.
  • Therefore he was determined to overcome his fear and after the trainer finished training him, he was still not satisfied.

(iii) He did the following to satisfy himself:

  • He went swimming all alone after the trainer finished training him.
  • He went to Lake Wentworth in New Hampshire.
  • In the end, he finally overcame his terror by swimming across Warm Lake.

(iv) The "old sensation" he experienced was of drowning.

  • When he was a toddler, he went to a beach in California with his father where he was knocked down by high waves. This incident left him frightened.
  • He was also thrown into the YMCA pool by a group of boys when he was around 10 or eleven. He wasn't able to come to the surface and was panicked.
  • These two incidents left him scared of water.
