Thomas has constant speeds for both running and walking. When a down-escalator is moving, Thomas can run down it in 15 seconds or walk down it in 30 seconds. One day, when the escalator was broken (and stationary), it took Thomas 20 seconds to run down it.
How long, in seconds, would it take Thomas to walk down the broken escalator?

Given : Thomas has constant speeds for both running and walking.

Thomas can run down escalator in 15 seconds

walk down escalator in 30 seconds.

when the escalator was broken (and stationary), it took Thomas 20 seconds to run down it.

To Find : How long, in seconds, would it take Thomas to walk down the broken escalator

Solution:

Distance = Speed * time

Let say Speed while Running  = R

Speed of Escalator  =  S

=> (R + S)15  = Distance covered

hen the escalator was broken (and stationary)

R(20) =  Distance covered

=> (R + S)15 = 20R

=> 15R  + 15S = 20R

=> 15S = 5R

=> 3S = R

Speed of Walk = W

(W + S)30  =  Distance covered

Let say T second taken

then WT = Distance covered = (W + S)30

(W + S)30  =   (R + S)15

R = 3S

=>  (W + S)30  =   (3S + S)15

=> 30W + 30S = 60S

=> 30W = 30S

=>  W = S

WT = (W + S)30

=> WT = ( W + W) 30

=> WT  = 2W(30)

=>WT  =  60W

=> T = 60

60 seconds

It will take 60 second ( 1 Min) to walk down the broken escalator
